I got a place to live in SoCal April-May! I have a furnished room in a nice apartment in Pasadena, a 10-minute walk from the Metro station, meaning I can take Metro to work instead of driving. Yesterday I applied on a whim to extern for Judge Reinhardt of the 9th Circuit in Los Angeles; I just wrapped up an interview with one of his clerks and accepted an offer on the spot.

You may remember that 10 months ago I mentioned a case before the Ninth Circuit (again) concerning Scientology and the IRS. Well, there's been a decision, available here [PDF], and as Tax Prof reports, it was not favorable to the petitioners (again). In 1993, the IRS entered into a secret agreement (as part of a dispute settlement) with the Church of Scientology allowing Scientologists to take certain tax deductions that no one else can take. Running the Race Judicata 5K in Seward Park in the rain = Seattle hazing ritual. 33:50, including roughly a minute where I had to stop to take off my jacket and roll up my sleeves.
